Shooting at London Fashion Week: Spring/Summer 2014 seasons

The shooting begins in front of the camera and not behind it (fashion blogger, Andy Torres of stylescrapbook.com, fashion designer Henry Holland and I are collaborating on a joint project including a film documentary ‘Canon, a year in fashion’). Andy and I discuss the merits of the EOS-1D X and my choice of EOS prime lenses along with the capabilities of the new and rather exciting PowerShot G16 compact (it has many of the capabilities of the 1DX but is the size of an atom).

Interview over and I’m free to shoot whatever I like. Quickly tiring of the street approach as model release will be an issue (too many people to ask for permissions and not enough time) I shoot some abstract details including clothes, shoes and accessories. I then decide to focus on individuals, opting to shoot portraits of the many ‘Fashionistas’. With the help of assistants Tillman Pretscher and Alyona Khudyakova we carefully choose people from the crowd.

Model releases signed, I whisk them away down the steps into the warren of locations surrounding Somerset House courtyard in London. Old brick and stone, architraves, moss, rubbish bins and newspapers become the new backdrop. Once detached from the masses I have far more control and quickly get to work. The overcast day gives a soft and even light which reaches us via the reflection from the surrounding buildings. I’m in my element and this is why I love photography. It's pure: just me, the camera and the subject. People fascinate me and I could do this all day.

The glamour continues at the NCP Brewer Street Car Park in Soho, this being the second time I’ve shot a Henry Holland show here, (the entire third floor) the first on three EOS 5D Mark IIIs for his Autumn Winter 2013 Look Book along with four C500 4K digital cinema cameras plus several Cinema EOS primes and zooms in collaboration with Codex 4K recorders. In comparison to the previous crew of 12 along with £0.5million of equipment, this time it is simple shooting backstage, with a single 1DX and a handful of primes.

Henry’s collection doesn’t disappoint and there’s much to shoot, mostly close-up details of the complex prints, patterns and embroidery. It’s beautiful. Mostly I use the EF50mm f/1.2L and EF85mm f/1.2L primes but decide to go in close on the action as it unfolds around the line-up and girls coming off the catwalk with the EF14mm f/2.8L. As the stars collide aftershow (Harry Styles, Kelly Osbourne, Pixie Geldof, Nicola Roberts and Ellie Goulding) I dissolve into the night and head home.

Tomorrow is another day of filming, this time at our home in Derbyshire. Andy and I will be discussing editing and post production in Lightroom and Photoshop. Then another passion, the dark art of print-making from my Canon IPF6450 large format printer – but that’s another Blog!
