Chairs, Shadows and Perspectives

For cases in which the studio space must be fully exploited or a perspective needs to be defined very precisely, the Canon EF24105mm f/4L IS USM is exactly the right lens. But of course, it should not be the lens that determines from which point I shoot an image, but my feelings and the idea behind the image.

Prior to outdoor shoots, it is completely normal to explore the area and try to find the best view or the best place for the pictures to be taken. I, however, also like to apply this approach inside my studio. I often begin by devising a layout and must therefore rely on my eyes and my mind to build a set that allows me to shoot the picture from a perspective that looks authentic.

If I shoot single objects, it doesn´t really matter if I stand four or six metres away, or whether I use a lens with a particular focal length or not. Yet when I take pictures in a clearly defined area with more than one object, it is important to show a relationship between the different objects. Here, as we all know, it is very important to use the correct focal length. Our picture will only work correctly if it corresponds to our viewing habits.

The set with the chair and the "Acrylic Couture" element (above) was constructed on a raised platform enabling me to work with a hard backlight installed close to the floor whilst also using a big spotlight in order to cast clear shadows. The set was not a very large one and I wanted to take the pictures from as close to the objects as possible. In this case, the use of a wide angle lens would have made the background seem overly large. It is therefore important to be able to select the right focal length exactly.

The correct use of the lens was even more important in taking the photograph of the chair and the shoes (below). In order for this picture to turn out well, it was necessary to ensure that the different sizes of the objects worked in conjunction with the shadows. Admittedly, the height of my studio played a role here, but, ultimately, I was able to shoot this image with a focal length of 60mm.

For such shoots in particular, the 24-105mm lens allows me to choose my position freely and simply adjust the focal length in accordance with my idea of the image.
