Exploring the EOS 7D Mark II: thoughts from a still-life expert

We ought to talk about pictures rather than photographic technology. Still, it is great when I can hold a camera in my hand that simply works for me; that allows me to photograph my ideas without great effort.

Here you can see a few pictures from a brief series I shot with a pre-production version of the new EOS 7D Mark II. I found good, detailed, reproduction and speed plus sharpness in the areas of focus – the most important consideration in still-life photography. The EOS 7D Mark II had me convinced for photos of moving subjects, but it's a great still-life tool too...

For this picture of wine glasses (above) I wanted to show detail and movement in harmony. It was easy to capture the right moment thanks to the 10 frames-per-second motordrive! It reminded me of a little story 'why is red wine red?' The answer, of course, is that once upon a time, there were two glasses of wine: a large, full-bodied one and a sleek and slender one. One day the slender glass leant suggestively against the large glass and at that moment, the wine within the large glass was so embarrassed that it turned bright red!

The next image, entitled 'Milky Coffee', was again made easy when I wanted to take a brief series of photos at several frames-per-second. The silence that the image evokes spurs from the moment when the drops are caught in just the right place. If I had shot this as just single shots, I would have had to clean the dishes after virtually every exposure...

And finally, a picture I just call 'Drinks' (bottom). Although it may look quiet, in this picture almost everything is moving. I tried to photograph the objects in such a way that very little editing would be needed after the shoot. So, for this picture, not only is the glass of green liquid moving but the drops of water and the ice cube are also in motion. In this shot, it’s vitally important to take the picture at the right moment and to make sure the focus is in exactly the desired area.

Can you guess how it went? Yes! It was no problem at all for Canon’s 65-point AF system with AF iTR. Even fine gradations are reproduced perfectly. I’m excited about this camera and even if you don’t have a background in technical photography I hope you can still enjoy the pictures.
