Striking images without people

If I have to take pictures that draw attention to one thing in particular, and there are no people in the image, I always try to reduce the content of the frame as far as possible. This leads to relatively simple images that are easy on the eye and lend themselves to a quick survey. This might seem that have only a decorative purpose. This is not meant to be a dismissive assessment, but perhaps a better term would describe the intention more accurately.

This is about striking images, like posters big or small.

If a picture looks like a poster, it is particularly memorable, and that means it is striking. The objects of the image are shown with emphasis. The objects are paraded. I think this is a good way to describe what I do in product and still-life photography.

The freedom to present objects in a special light and to represent them from an individual perspective is effective, but it is a challenge in photography without people.

My advice is to play with the things you want to photograph. Try stacking products, as I did here in the photo with the glasses (bottom). The idea to photograph them in this way came from not knowing initially what to do. I was looking for a special perspective and the eventual result came from playing with the glasses until I was happy.

OK, I have to admit it really was a balancing act. I couldn’t be sure the glasses would not end up damaged in this shoot! The pear was covered partially with black tissue paper and I shot it using double exposure.

Special photographic techniques, working with new perspectives, experimenting with sharp and blurred areas; there are no boundaries in modern still-life photography...
