I've been photographing the Guilin/Yangshuo/Xing Ping areas in Guangxi province, China, since 2006 and witnessing the fast decay of the cormorant fisherman in the Li River. The youngest fisherman are attracted by new and more profitable jobs, opening the way for the disappearing of a traditional craft and culture. Centuries are fading within years, a compass of what's happening all around us, giving photographers and photography the key role of documenting, for present and future memory, breaking the barriers of space and time in just one frame.

Technically speaking, the greatest challenge while photographing the fisherman was to get a shutter speed high enough to freeze their motion while handhelding the camera, especially at sunrise and sunset, when the available light is just to scarce. Using wide apertures and a high ISO was the only way to overcome the problem, but, fortunately, high ISO performance improved substantially since 2006 and I grew confident in using those settings, namely in the 2011 and 2012 expeditions. The EOS 5D Mark II, and specially, the EOS 5D Mark III really excelled and the images are virtually noise free.

You're welcome to take a look at some more photos of the fisherman and this area at www.joelsantos.net
