Spring is here and it's beautiful! Like me, you are probably inspired by the smells, blossom and wildlife. Today, I decided to work from home. I sat and played with my youngest daughter and we were joined by a friendly robin. My daughter and I watched this young bird hop about, getting closer and closer. If only I had my camera with me!

That was easily remedied as I quietly darted inside and picked up my EOS-1D C that I use for photography and shooting 4K video. My lens of choice was an EF70-200mm f2.8L IS USM. This was the second ever lens I bought! It's not the current model, but to this day is well used and working well after travelling all over the world with me. I'm glad I invested in the best Canon glass I could afford at the time.

I sat back in the garden and waited, for all but a few minutes and then there she was! I set my camera to JPEG mode because I can't always be bothered to edit RAW files when shooting for myself. JPEGs will retain the picture style information, so my settings for contrast, saturation, sharpness and so on are all saved to the file. This means my images would be 90-100% there as long as my exposure was correct. My shutter was set to continuous, so that I could shoot multiple images in one second - up to 14 frames-per-second if need on the 1D C and 1D X.

The robin landed in front of me and darted back and forth. For a second, she was too close to focus. I had a zoom lens on the camera, assuming that the bird would get close, but I wasn't prepared for the bird to land 4 inches away! Luckily the robin hopped just over a metre away, and that's when I got the image! Bam!

I smugly trotted upstairs and downloaded the image using Canon's Digital Photo Professional (DPP) software, adjusted the saturation and saved it!

I may not be Canon Explorer Danny Green, but it doesn't stop us all from trying! As you enjoy the beauty of spring and summer, look for opportunities to take great images. Even if it's in your own garden!
