Rhino poaching: can we stop it?

During the last few years I have worked closely with an anti-poaching unit called 'Protrack Anti-Poaching Unit'. We are trying to stop the poaching of rhinos that is going on in South Africa. Since 2007 the increase in poaching of rhinos has been more than 7700%. Today three rhinos are poached every day and it is increasing. These guys and girls [from the 'Protrack Anti-Poaching Unit'] live and breathe anti-poaching and it has been a great honour to work with these heroes; they really make a difference.

The last year has been a disaster for the rhinos so we have realised that we also need to change the way we work. Now, we have been lucky to get support and help from an organisation called 'The Perfect World Foundation' that has helped with finance. That has really helped our team to be able to do more and to work in new ways and, in the last 14 days, it has really paid off!

The results from the last 14 days have included: 12 arrests of poachers from three different groups; the seizure of five weapons, over 40 rounds [of ammunition], four silencers and knives and axes. Two orphaned rhinos have been rescued and two autopsies have been performed on mother rhinos.

If the rhinos can get more support the future for them will begin to look much brighter. We need to stop the poaching!
