Lions: from 450,000 to about 20,000 today...

...this is the scary fact about the last 50 years of 'development' for lions. That is about a decrease of more than 95% in 50 years. Many people think that lions are common but nowadays they are getting more and more rare and, if this goes on, there is a risk they will become extinct.

We need to stop the canned hunting (hunting in a confined area where the lions cannot escape) for which different places breed lions; firstly so that tourists can come and help out hand-feeding them and later on so that the tourists can “walk” with lions. When the lions are getting to be full-grown adults they are sold for canned hunting. So, please never pet (touch) lions or believe that it is 'conservation' to breed lions; they will most probably end up being killed by hunters.

I really hope my grandchildren also get to see these wonderful animals in the wild and we can stop the canned hunting. That is one of the reasons they [lions] are getting fewer but it is mostly down to lost habitats, so we need more National Parks in different parts of Africa. And don't forget that Asian lions that are down to about just 200 to 300 left in India.
