A New Year's Eve wedding

By Jeff Ascough, Wednesday January 27, 2016
The father of the bride pins the buttonhole onto the young page boy. This is my favourite picture from the last wedding of 2015. For me, weddings are about relationships and moments. This is a perfect moment between grandfather and grandson. You cannot stage or set up moments like these. Taken on a Canon EOS 5D Mark III with an EF85mm f/1.8 USM lens; the exposure was 1/80sec at f/2.5, ISO 1600.

Our new wedding season starts this weekend. I say 'new', but what I really mean is that this is the start of the 2016 weddings. We don’t have a season anymore in the traditional sense, as there are only a couple of months each year when we don’t cover a wedding. Our last wedding of 2015 actually bridged the gap between the two years as it was shot on New Year's Eve. We started the wedding in 2015 and finished it in 2016!

NYE is such an amazing time to photograph someone's wedding. Not only do you get the emotion and anticipation of the wedding itself, but also the inevitable partying that occurs in the minutes before the midnight countdown. It's always a long day – this event was 14 hours – but it is always thoroughly enjoyable.

With every New Year there inevitably comes a resolution. Mine is to simplify the way I work. I’m taking less gear this year, and working within the confines of just a couple of lenses. Changing an approach so dramatically often leads to new and exciting images as I force my eye out of its comfort zone and look for new ways to photograph. As we go into 2016, this year promises to be one of the busiest yet and we like to stay busy; a busy photographer keeps their eye in, improves their anticipation and produces better work as a result.

So, for my first post of this year I’m showcasing my two favourite images: one from the final day of 2015 and the other from the first day of 2016. Have a fantastic New Year.

A guest does his best 'air guitar' as the party moves on towards midnight. This was the most humorous image of the day - it made me smile when I took it and it still makes me smile when I see it now. Taken on a Canon EOS 5D Mark III with an EF85mm f/1.8 USM lens; the exposure was 1/125sec at f/1.8, ISO 6400.

Singing 'Auld Lang Syne' on the stroke of midnight - my favourite picture of 2016 (so far!). This was shot by Sarah as the guests brought in the New Year. For me it just sums up what it means to be at a New Year's Eve party. Taken on a Canon EOS 6D with an EF35mm f/2 IS USM; the exposure was 1/250sec at f/2, ISO 12,800.
