Great things come in small packages

Coming from a rangefinder photography background I have always held an appreciation for the advantages of small, lightweight lenses; both in terms of transporting equipment but more importantly when photographing people.

When Canon announced the new range of small image stabilised prime lenses last year – and seeing Don McCullin work his magic with both the Canon EF24mm and 28mm f/2.8 IS lenses in France last June, and spending time processing those images – my interest in small lenses was rekindled. The optical quality was superb. OK, they don’t have the famous red stripe of the L-series, but then neither does the TS-E45mm f/2.8 and few photographers in the world that would argue against that being a professional lens.

I have used the Canon EF28mm f/2.8 IS USM lens since last September for a lot of my light work where I am able to utilise the IS for motion blur techniques and for when I am in close proximity to subjects I’m photographing. The only thing that prevented me from using it continuously was the focal length; it is a little wider than I would like when shooting people. This changed a couple of months ago when I received the new Canon EF35mm f/2 IS USM lens. Along with my old Canon EF85mm f/1.8 lens, I now have a selection of small, light and optically superb lenses, which I’m happy to cover 90% of my work with.
