Preparing for the new season

My wedding season starts this weekend and goes right through to the end of December. This week has been all about preparation, which is something every wedding photographer needs to consider as a wedding isn’t something you can repeat if anything goes wrong on the day.

Cameras are probably the most important thing to make sure are in tip-top condition before the start of the season. I get mine checked over and serviced with CPS at the beginning of the year in preparation for the new season. It may sound like overkill to many, but how many wedding photographers would miss servicing their car each year? At the start of each season I make a decision on what lenses I will be using for the season and those are cleaned, serviced and calibrated to the cameras. Camera batteries are checked for capacity and recharge performance and replaced as necessary. Cards are very important so the CF and SD cards are checked (particularly the SDs) for damage and performance and are replaced as necessary. The cameras have had their clocks synchronised with each other and Custom Functions duplicated across each body.

This week I’ve also been checking things like straps, card holders and camera bags for wear and tear. As a young photographer I have experienced straps on camera bags failing at a wedding. Not ideal!

I’m really looking forward to this season more than any in the past 10 years. Can't wait for Saturday!
