The Power of 50 MP

There is one part of the EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R that is particularly special: the high-resolution CMOS sensor designed and built by Canon. Boasting 50.6 Megapixels and delivering a file quality that rivals larger medium-format camera systems, it offers ample opportunity for cropping with no loss of detail.

To get so many pixels on to the cameras’ 36x24mm sensor, each photodiode has been made much smaller, while improvements in semiconductor manufacturing has ensured that image quality has not been compromised by excessive digital noise. The sensor uses optimised gapless microlenses with a reduced distance to the photodiode to improve the light gathering efficiency and its design also enables the EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R to offer the same wide dynamic range as the EOS 5D Mark III.

In this video, top sports and advertising photographer Adam Pretty demonstrates the remarkable quality that can be achieved by the sensor, even when used underwater in a housing. He reveals why he loves the EOS 5DS R’s ability to retain highlight detail and how it performs to an exceptionally high standard even when shooting rapid sequences of up to five frames-per-second. The images of divers photographed underwater will amaze you.

“So much drama happens in the blink of an eye. There’s so much detail you want to capture in those split seconds. With the 5DS or 5DS R I can now shoot a sports or commercial job at 50 Megapixels. I’m pretty much picking up a studio camera and being able to use it in a sports environment... and it doesn’t miss a beat.”
