The French Association des Femmes Journalistes (AFJ) and Canon France, in association with Images-Evidence, have announced that the 12th annual Canon Female Photojournalist Award is open until 31 May 2012 for submissions from female photojournalists of any age and nationality.

The Canon AFJ Award is supported by Le Figaro Magazine and Canon France will grant the winning female photojournalist €8,000 to help her to continue and complete a photojournalistic project on a social, economic, political or cultural subject.

A jury comprised of photography and press professionals, and members of the AFJ, will begin the selection process to find the winner in June 2012. Submissions will be judged on the presentation of their project and their previous work. Among the selection criteria are the quality of the photographs, the journalistic thinking behind the project and the relevance of the chosen subject.

The winner will receive the award during the 2012 Visa pour l’Image international festival of photojournalism in Perpignan, France, and will then continue with a project that will lead to an exhibition or a screening at the Visa pour l’Image festival in 2013.

Dutch photojournalist Ilvy Njiokiktjien won the 2011 Canon AFJ Award for her proposed report on Afrikaner adolescents who have attended Afrikaner youth camps in South Africa. The other previous 10 winners of the Canon AFJ Award were photojournalists Martina Bacigalupo, Justyna Mielnikiewicz, Brenda Anne Kenneally, Axelle de Russé, Veronique de Viguerie, Claudia Guadarrama, Kristen Ashburn, Ami Vitale, Sophia Evans and Magali Delporte.
