January 2016

Canon Europe has announced its support of the Young Wildlife Photographer category of the prestigious Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition, which is now open for entries from now until Thursday 25 February 2016...

The 52nd Wildlife Photographer of the Year Competition boasts an international jury of experts including entomologist and wildlife photographer Piotr Naskrecki, German photographer Klaus Nigge, and Roz Kidman Cox who returns for the 32nd time as a judge, will critique each entry to select 100 winners. Editor and creative director Lewis Blackwell will chair the panel for a second year.

The competition harnesses the power of photography to challenge perceptions and encourage change to provide a sustainable Earth for future generations. ‘It champions ethical wildlife photography, seeking the representation of the natural world as faithfully as possible. Images are expected to be free from excessive digital manipulation, with honesty in all captioning, and to be taken with total respect for animals in their environments,’ the contest states.

Canada’s Connor Stefanison won the Rising Star Portfolio Award last year. In this image, a female American dipper has just delivered a beakful of invertebrates to her demanding chicks in their riverbank nest. Taken on a Canon EOS 5D Mark II with an EF16-35mm f/2.8L II USM lens at 22mm; the exposure was 1/60sec at f/13, ISO 1600.

“I am already excited by the anticipation of revelatory images in the 2016 winners,” said Lewis Blackwell, chair of the jury. “Last year’s entries captured previously unseen aspects of the natural world, giving us remarkable insights and making us look at the familiar with fresh eyes. As chair of the jury, I feel immensely privileged to help lead a competition that really helps celebrate wildlife and spotlight key issues. It is important that we encourage photographers everywhere, of all ages, from top professionals to aspiring amateurs.”

By taking part, photographers get the chance to win a trip to London to take centre stage at the Wildlife Photographer of the Year awards ceremony, held within the iconic surroundings of the Natural History Museum. They see their image premiered in the exhibition of award winners at the Museum before it embarks on a global tour reaching an audience of millions. They also enjoy extensive media coverage and public exposure of their images and the messages behind them.
