April 2013

Photography student Max Jowitt has been selected from over 250 entrants, and over 1300 images, as the winner of the Canon ‘Best Shot’ competition which set students the challenge to photograph, edit, caption and file a five-image portfolio within 45 minutes of covering the recent 2013 London Fashion Weekend shows.

The ‘Best Shot’ challenge was arranged by Canon in conjunction with the British Fashion Council and gave students from UK photography colleges and universities access to the photographers’ end-of-catwalk pits at designer and ‘trend shows’ during two days of the first 2013 London Fashion Weekend. The top prize was an EOS 650D DSLR kit and a two-day pass as an accredited photographer to shoot the next London Fashion Week in September 2013.

Frankie Jim (CCI Professional Imaging Specialist, Canon UK) explained: “We made sure that each the student had two shows to shoot. It was a mixture of ‘trend shows’, which are repeated throughout the day, and designer shows, which are only shown once. The students get a briefing on the assignment by a member of Canon staff on what to do and what not to do; then get escorted into the pit and shoot the show.” After their shoots the students were given just 45 minutes to produce their entries despite the fact there was no direct WiFi internet access at the venue.

Photography student Max Jowitt, pictured above, has won an EOS 650D kit and two days as an accredited photographer at the September 2013 London Fashion Week after coming first in Canon’s recent ‘Best Shot’ London Fashion Weekend competition.

Competition winner Max Jowitt, who is in the first year of a degree in digital photography at the Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication in London, England, filed his entry from a coffee shop. He told CPN: “The shoot was really fun – it was the first time I’d done anything like it, so it was a really good experience. It was stressful but I got it done. I tethered to my phone and sent off the images just in time. I was shocked I won; I checked my ‘sent box’ and I didn’t think my second set of images had been sent, so I thought I’d ‘flunked’ it. It [winning] has really opened up a lot more opportunities for me and is great to add to my CV and portfolio.”

Max Jowitt shot the shows with his EOS 5D Mark III DSLR and an EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM zoom lens. He explained: “A lot of people were just getting the basic shots of the models but I wanted to try something different, like wider angles to get the whole venue [in the shot], and I even tried a zoom burst by slowing the shutter speed down and zooming in to get this kind of blurred, but patterned, image. I was sitting on the floor, so I literally had the camera resting on the floor and was shooting up to get some more powerful shots.”

He added: “My interest in photography started off from a young age being interested in cameras, but I properly took up photography when I started my ‘A Level’ in it... I had some really good teachers who got me interested in the history of photography. I developed my skills and then wanted to do a degree in photography. I’ve always used Canon cameras – I started off with an EOS 500D when I started my ‘A Level’; then I saved for years and bought the [EOS] 5D Mark III when I started my degree.”

As to the future Max Jowitt said: “I’m trying a lot of different things at the minute but press photography, photojournalism, is the thing I love to do.”

The Canon ‘Best Shot’ competition is just one of the many aspects of Canon’s involvement during the two London Fashion Weeks that are held every year. Canon is the Official Imaging Partner for the British Fashion Council, is a sponsor of London Fashion Week for all season shows until the end of 2014 and also supports the Vodafone London Fashion Weekend and the British Fashion Awards.

At every London Fashion Week Canon Professional Services (CPS) provides a photographers’ centre that offers a range of support services for all accredited photographers and videographers. The on-site services include minor camera repairs, a camera and lens loan facility and a team of Canon technical experts is always on hand to handle any questions and provide help.

The British Fashion Council and Canon have also worked together on an initiative designed to support emerging designers to develop visual materials and create ‘look books’ published on Canon printers. This year the collaborations included those with designers David Koma, Michael van der Ham and Holly Fulton.

  • Canon will be present throughout the next London Fashion Week from 13-17 September 2013 and the London Fashion Weekend from 19-22 September 2013 at Somerset House in London, England.
