October 2014

Michele McNally, Director of Photography and Assistant Managing Editor of The New York Times, USA, has been announced as chair of the 2015 World Press Photo Contest jury.

McNally will be joined by a group of 16 other industry professionals – identities to be announced soon – to judge the prestigious annual photojournalism contest, which will open for entries on 1 December 2014.

Michele McNally became Director of Photography for The New York Times in June 2004, after being Picture Editor of Fortune Magazine from 1986 until May 2004, and was promoted to Assistant Managing Editor in July 2005. Previously, she had been Picture Editor of Time Life's Magazine Development Group and began her career with the Sygma Photo News agency back in 1977. She has been a World Press Photo jury member on three previous occasions and chaired the jury of the 2007 Photo Contest.

Michele McNally, Director of Photography and Assistant Managing Editor of The New York Times, USA (pictured above) will chair the 2015 World Press Photo Contest jury.

Under her tenure, The New York Times has won three Pulitzer Prizes in photography, has twice been a finalist, and has also received the Visa pour l’Image festival’s Visa D’or for news on two occasions. McNally has judged numerous photography contests, including Pictures of the Year International, Overseas Press Club, White House News Photographers, American Photography and Best of Photojournalism, Getty Grants and was on the Pulitzer photo jury in 2008 and 2009. She has also curated a permanent gallery for Time-Life and The New York Times.

When asked about her expectations of the task ahead, McNally said: “I feel I will see extraordinary pictures from the events of last year. I expect it will be a tough year to be a judge and make selections from the very worthy images that have been produced. So much has transpired. I think there will be many discussions about the most important historical events and there is no easy answer to that question.”

McNally also reflected on what has changed since she last was on the jury in 2007, commenting: “These past years have sadly seen an unusual amount of wars, destruction, fleeing refugees, deadly immigration, assassinations, terrorist attacks, natural disasters, uprisings, drought, famine, diseases, even an Ebola epidemic. It seems to me that the news has been way more unrelenting in recent times, then during that period. We have more and more photographers shooting on multiple fronts and news situations.”

She added: “The other thing that has changed over these years is how dangerous and treacherous it is to cover these conflicts, for photojournalists and journalists. These last years have been tough on both. We have seen colleagues and friends killed, kidnapped, maimed, and even beheaded publicly. It is a constant challenge to weigh the news value against the danger. Security is the first concern.”

How to enter the contest?

The 2015 World Press Photo Contest will be open for participants to enter their work on 1 December 2014. The deadline for submissions is 14 January 2015, 23.59 CET.
