Lyon replaces Knight as 2013 World Press Photo jury chairman

Santiago Lyon, vice president and director of photography at the Associated Press, will chair the 2013 World Press Photo Contest jury. He takes over the task from Gary Knight who is unable to join the judging due to bereavement in the family. Lyon's place in the News and Documentary jury during the first round of judging will be filled by Jocelyn Bain Hogg from the UK, a photographer at the VII Photo Agency.

Michiel Munneke, Managing Director of World Press Photo commented: "I am thankful that such experienced and valued people are part of the World Press Photo network and that they are eager to commit at short notice. I am confident that the jury is in capable hands with Santiago Lyon at the head."

The winners of the 56th annual World Press Photo Contest will be announced on Friday 15 February 2013 at 11:00am (CET). Following the announcement, the awarded photos will be published on the World Press Photo website.

The results of the contest will be announced on 15 February 2013 and the prize-winning pictures will then be showcased in an exhibition that travels to more than 100 cities, in over 45 countries, starting in Amsterdam at the end of April 2013.

Biography: Santiago Lyon

Santiago Lyon

Santiago Lyon, USA, is vice president and director of photography of The Associated Press, responsible for the AP’s global photo report and the hundreds of photographers and photo editors worldwide who produce it. He has 26 years of experience in news-service photography and has won multiple photojournalism awards for his coverage of conflicts around the globe. Under Lyon’s direction, the AP earned its 29th Pulitzer Prize for photography in 2005, for work on the war in Iraq by a team of 11 photographers, five of them Iraqis. In 2007, the AP won its 30th Pulitzer Prize for photography, for a single image by Oded Balilty. Lyon also serves as a nominator for the Joop Swart Masterclass. In 2009, he sat on the masterclass selection jury, and was a master himself in 2010.
