June 2012

Young photographers have until 31 July 2012 to enter The Times/Canon Young Photographer of the Year 2012 competition with a first prize that includes a six-month contract with the world famous newspaper’s picture desk.

The competition, which is being sponsored by Canon UK for the third time, is in its tenth year and aims to find the UK’s best young news photographer. The previous competition was won by Naomi Goggin who impressed the judges by doorstepping British politician David Miliband the day he stepped down from frontline UK politics (see lead image above). As well as a six-month full-time contract with The Times (London) newspaper the winner will also receive a Canon EOS 5D Mark III DSLR, Canon EF24-70mm f/2.8L II and EF70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM zoom lenses, and a Canon Speedlite 600EX flashgun.

The winner will also receive a year’s membership to the British Press Photographer’s Association, whilst five runners up will each receive a Canon Powershot G12 camera. All six finalists will have their work displayed at The Frontline Club in Paddington, London. The overall winner will be unveiled at The Frontline Club during a reception hosted by The Times in October 2012.

Entry is open to photographers who are residents of the UK and Republic of Ireland and aged between 18 and 26. Entries must consist of photographs for three out of five of the competition categories – Reportage/News, Portraiture, Lifestyle/Fashion, Sport, and Travel. The closing date is midnight on 31 July 2012. The Times advises: “Don’t try to be too clever: if you need to explain your picture in a lengthy caption then the picture isn’t working. A powerful picture needs no explanation – it speaks for itself.”

The Picture Editor of The Times, Paul Sanders, explained: “Winning this competition has become one of the most prestigious prizes for young photographers; it has a proven pedigree of placing young talent in a position to fulfill their dreams. Each of the previous winners has gone on to launch very successful careers in news photography. With the continued support of Canon we are able to offer even greater support to the winner to establish themselves as professional photographers”.
