Macro Ring Lite
MR-14EX II flash: for greater macro creativity

The Macro Ring Lite MR-14EX II is a specialist Speedlite for those who are passionate or have a strong interest in macro photography as well as professional photographers who need to produce images with quality lighting in compact spaces.

Who is it for?

For photographers who are determined to get the very best lighting for macro subjects, the Macro Ring Lite MR-14EX II makes a compelling case. A range of new and enhanced features offer even greater operability while redesigned controls mean users can operate the unit from their DSLR’s menu or touchscreen. A powerful Guide Number of 14 means there is plenty of power when you need it most while a new charge indicator displays the flash’s charge progress – which has been improved to just 5.5 seconds – allowing photographers to capture timid subjects in near silence.

Key features

  • Ring-flash design for versatile lighting.
  • Independently variable dual flash tubes.
  • Powerful performance – guide number 14 (ISO 100, metres).
  • Trigger other flashes wirelessly.
  • LED modelling lamps improve low-light focusing.
  • Easy-to-use controls.
  • Fast, silent recycling.

Control from camera menu

Compatible with Canon’s complete range of EOS DSLRs, the Macro Ring Lite MR-14EX II, seen here on an EOS 5D Mark III DSLR, offers photographers fully automatic E-TTL II flash metering.

The MR-14EX II controls and Custom Functions are controllable from the camera’s menu screen including those with touch-screen, making operation and set-up simple. The operability has been further improved by using the interface and control panel from the Speedlite 600EX-RT and 600EX.

Improved design

An improved body design includes a new one-touch lock lever, making it quick and simple to attach the flash to EOS DSLRs. A new metal mounting foot and dust wiping mechanism also provides additional durability and reliability, while the cord is now attached to the right of the body, preventing interference with the camera’s shutter button. The overall design also makes it easy to attach filters to lenses, providing even greater creative freedom.

LED focusing lamps

High-brightness white LEDs are used to aid focusing.

High-brightness white LEDs, brighter than the previous MR-14EX's krypton lamps, are used for the focusing lamps. This enables easier focusing under low-light conditions. Pressing the LAMP button will turn on the lamps for 20 seconds. Pressing the shutter button completely will turn them off any time.

Flash unit design

The ring-shaped flash unit design has changed to accommodate new left and right flash tubes that can be controlled independently. The Guide Number and flash coverage for both sides when firing is 14/45.9 (ISO 100 in metres/feet). For single-side firing, the Guide Number is kept to 10.5/34.4 (ISO 100, in metres/feet) to prevent overheating of the flash tube.

Colour temperature information transmission

The MR-14EX II now transmits colour temperature information to the camera during firing to help achieve optimum white balance for flash shooting.

Wireless flash Master Function

The wireless master function uses optical transmission to allow users to be creative in their use of lighting when used in conjunction with other Canon Speedlite flashes, such as the 270EX II, which have a built-in slave function.

Instead of using a ring flash as the main illumination, other Speedlites can be used to provide more creative or dramatic effects. Through slave technologies the user can use the MR-14EX II as a master light and trigger other Speedlite flashes to creatively light the background or subject from unusual angles.
