XEED WUX400ST:
a unique compact short throw WUXGA projector

Canon’s first ever WUXGA short throw compact installation projector is the impressive XEED WUX400ST. It has a superb array of features, including an outstanding short throw shiftable lens that can project an image of up to 100” from just 1.2 metres, 4000 lumens brightness and exceptional energy efficiency.

WHO IS IT FOR?

The XEED WUX400ST is designed for both front and rear projection installations and is especially suited to environments where space is at a premium, as well as larger venues where long cable runs are difficult or expensive to implement. A digital enlargement capability of 1.4x, and no image distortion, means it is perfect for short throw scenarios where image quality is paramount.

It is perfect for a wide variety of applications including use for business presentations, in higher education lecture theatres, for engineering and design usage, for photography clubs, for simulation training and for medical imaging.

Exceptional Short throw shiftable lens

The XEED WUX400ST is a unique high-resolution compact installation multimedia projector. Its short throw Canon projection lens features an exceptionally wide range of vertical and horizontal lens shift. This all-new lens virtually eliminates distortion (typically 0.1%) and has a throw ratio of just 0.557:1. So a 100" image can be projected from just 1.2 metres – around one third of the throw distance required by conventional projectors. Despite its short focal length, the lens projects images from 30" up to a large 300" diagonal in size. With both vertical and horizontal shift – including an exceptionally wide 75% vertical range – the projector can be discreetly located above or below the screen and is suitable for both front and rear projection.

Advanced image processing

Native WUXGA resolution (1920x1200 pixels) and Full HD capabilities are supported by LCOS display technology that delivers stunning, perfectly smooth images. Alongside its professional-quality optics, the XEED WUX400ST’s new image processing engine is packed with installer-friendly features like hardware edge blending, on-board registration adjustment (to ensure perfect RGB panel alignment) and built-in test patterns. The picture-by-picture image display supports twin digital inputs so it’s perfect for modern video-conferencing applications. The 4-Point Keystone Correction function help project images from almost any angle with perfect geometry, while Motion Blur reduction keeps images sharp during fast-moving video playback.

Bright, fluid images

The latest Canon AISYS optical system is more efficient than ever. Delivering 4000 lumens of brightness and a 2000:1 contrast ratio, images are clear, bright and vivid – with the same outstandingly accurate colours and smooth image rendition you expect from the XEED range.

Flexible connectivity

The XEED WUX400ST features HDMI and DVI terminals for digital input and unsurpassed image quality. Firmware can be updated quickly and simply via the projector’s USB port, which also allows projection directly from USB flash drives. Crestron RoomView® enables instant unified remote control and monitoring, while the Network Multi-Projection (NMPJ) function allows for easy projection over the LAN.

Easy installation and configuration options

The XEED WUX400ST’s new flat-top chassis includes clever feet mounting options and enables a variety of different multiple projector configurations. Stacking and upward and downward projection are all easy to achieve.

Durability and energy efficiency

The XEED WUX400ST features new, more durable, optical components with an improved service life and its lamp lasts up to 5,000 hours when used in ECO mode. A dedicated ECO button instantly engages the low-power lamp mode and other power-saving features for outstandingly energy-efficient operation.

LCOS panel technology

For the XEED WUX400ST, Canon has developed a new, more durable 0.71” LCOS panel. The XEED WUX400ST uses a wide-ultra-XGA (WUXGA) panel, which has a resolution of 1920x1200 pixels. The projector is equipped with three of these high-quality display panels, one for each primary colour. The high resolution is made possible due to the extremely precise panel construction. With conventional LCD panels, gaps between neighbouring pixels are required for the drive circuit. On LCOS panels however, the circuit is mounted on the rear of the panel, allowing the pixel pitch to be shrunk, subsequently producing a higher resolution for a given panel size.

The ‘Aperture Ratio’ of a display panel is the ratio of the effective area versus the entire panel area. The latest LCOS panel has an aperture ratio of around 96% - higher than ever before. Unlike traditional LCD devices, LCOS panels are reflective. Whereas LCD panels work by allowing light from the projection lamp to pass through them, the LCOS panel reflects light, meaning that more light passes unimpeded to the projection lens. Hence, the familiar dark ‘grid’ pattern that is normally associated with projected images is almost completely eliminated. The result is that beautiful, seamless images are produced.

Aspectual Illumination System (AISYS) technology

Developed to work perfectly with the new LCOS panel, the fifth generation of Canon’s Aspectual Illumination System (AISYS) makes its debut in the XEED WUX400ST.

Historically, the performance of LCOS projectors has been limited by either low brightness, or low contrast. Canon’s Aspectual Illumination System (AISYS) is a precision optical system which maximises the performance of the LCOS panels, delivering simultaneously high levels of brightness and contrast. The new Short Throw range features the fifth generation of Canon AISYS technology, delivering a contrast ratio of up to 2000:1 alongside a brightness of 4000 lumens.

The latest version of AISYS has been constructed without the use of organic polarising filters. Previously, these organic components would typically be the first parts to fail after an extended period of use, requiring replacement by skilled service personnel. Within this latest optical system, the polarisation conversion component is now constructed from inorganic materials. As a result, it has a far longer lifespan, and therefore there is no need to replace this component, even after extended use.

Imaging Engine technology

Canon has developed a new image processing engine (chip) especially for its 2013 range of compact installation projectors – the XEED WUX450, XEED WX520, XEED WUX400ST and XEED WX450ST.

The new chip offers a whole host of advantages that weren’t available on previous Canon projectors. These include presentation using the network, edge blending (for multi-screen displays), built-in test patterns (useful in setting up and image adjustment), 4-point keystone correction, and picture-by-picture display for displaying images from two sources at once.
