I’ve been educating and speaking to photographers for 20 years now. I enjoy it tremendously and have been invited to present workshops and seminars all over Europe, America, and the Far East. Unfortunately, my schedule often means that I can only do one or two events each year and in recent years the UK has taken priority as their events have been the easiest to work around.

Canon Romania has invited me to their country for the past four years. In the past, the timings have never quite worked out for us but, after they suggested that they would be willing to fit around my availability, we got together to see what we could do. Dates were set and I proposed a full day seminar with a couple of smaller workshops over five days. The event was announced and then the fun started...

For the full day seminar there was an initial allocation of 130 places at a studio in Bucharest which was to be the main venue. Those seats sold out in less than 30 minutes. It was immediately obvious that the demand for places was going to be much higher than we had anticipated and so the event was switched to a 500 seat cinema in the centre of Bucharest. Those places sold out within a few hours and a further 300 photographers were on a waiting list for any places that might become available. It was the biggest event that Canon Romania ever held and they pulled out all the stops to ensure it worked perfectly. In addition to the main seminar I did six or seven interviews for the Romanian wedding photography community, the bridal press and state television. It was incredibly hard work but a truly wonderful thing to be part of.

It is impossible to put into words what it feels like to speak in a cinema. I’ve spoken in America and Switzerland to 400 photographers in one session but in a conference room where you only see the first four or five rows of people. A cinema gives you access to everyone. Seeing my images projected onto a 40-50 feet high cinema screen was just insane!

An event like this doesn’t happen without the dedication and passion of the people behind the scenes. My personal thanks go to George Stanculeanu from Canon Romania and Ferenc Torok from Canon Austria. Their hospitality was overwhelming and unlike anything I’ve ever experienced with Canon. I wanted for nothing and I really hope to work with them again in the future. They are absolute legends.

Feedback from the event has been overwhelming and incredibly humbling. My social media channels have been full of photographs and thanks. It’s a really wonderful thing to know that you have been, albeit in a small way, part of someone’s photographic life. I shall remember the passion, knowledge, warmth and kindness of Romania’s photographers for a long time.

Romania - Thank you for everything and I hope our paths shall cross again.
