Canon has reached a new production milestone in the history of its EOS series of film and digital SLR cameras – which launched in 1987 – with the announcement that its 40 millionth EOS camera has been manufactured.

The latest production achievement comes less than two years and a half years since the production landmark of 30 million EOS cameras was reached. It also marks the busiest-ever production period in the history of the EOS SLR range.

Since its launch back in 1987 the EOS (which stands for ‘Electro Optical System’) SLR system has seen a series of groundbreaking advances in technology. Accelerating demand from professional and amateur photographers around the world has resulted in increased production levels, taking total manufacturing to over 40 million units, including 20 million EOS digital models.

The key EOS SLR production milestones are:

  • 1987 – the first-ever EOS SLR, the EOS 650 (pictured above), was produced at Canon’s manufacturing facility in Fukushima, Japan.
  • 1997 – a decade after the launch of the EOS system manufacturing levels of EOS SLR cameras passes the 10 million mark.
  • 2003 – the 20 millionth EOS camera rolls off Canon's production line, doubling the previous 10 million landmark in a period of just six years.
  • December 2007 – during the EOS series’ 20-year anniversary, total production of EOS SLR cameras rose past the 30 million mark.
  • April 2010 – Canon reaches its current 40 million production milestone, with production of the latest 10 million EOS cameras in just two years and four months.

At its launch the EOS series was a completely new system of AF SLR cameras, incorporating the world’s first electronic mount to achieve complete electronic control throughout the entire camera system. The EOS series’ high speed and easy-to-use features have continued to evolve ever since, producing landmark products, including the original EOS-1 professional SLR in 1989, and the compact EOS 500 in 1993 – both of which helped to expand Canon’s appeal to photographers whatever their level of expertise.

Following the introduction of the EOS D30 in the year 2000, Canon has developed a range of advanced technologies driven by the company’s ambition to produce the highest image quality possible. These have included proprietary CMOS sensors, high-performance DIGIC digital image processors and an extensive line-up of EF lenses.

In February 2010 Canon launched its latest EOS camera – the EOS 550D, a revolutionary consumer digital SLR camera with an 18 megapixel CMOS sensor, extended ISO range and Full HD video capabilities.

The latest EOS production landmark comes just four months after Canon announced it had achieved its latest significant milestone in lens production with the manufacture of its 50 millionth EF lens, following incredible demand that saw over 10 million lenses produced in just under two years.

Canon is continuing to strive to produce innovative products that enable photographers to take more than pictures, providing the technologies and features that allow users to ‘take stories’ with the best possible image quality.
