March 2010

The fifth issue of CPN magazine, available in five languages, is now being distributed. It provides an answer to a question often asked of professional photographers: 'Where did you get that idea?' More often than not, the answer can be reduced to: 'I was just curious'.

One day last year, the former war photographer and Pulitzer Prize winner Karsten Thielker was intrigued by a series of tiny gaps that he’d spotted in a long, white wall while travelling near his home in Manila. What he found beyond the wall was a whole community of people who were living literally metres below airliners landing at the city’s international airport. His images tell the remarkable story of a struggle to break out of poverty and poor health.

Sometimes an idea doesn’t know it’s a good one until years after its conception. Swiss art photographer Hannes Schmid’s trip to a Status Quo concert led to hundreds of rare and revealing images of rock stars from the 1970s and '80s that have only recently been published. CPN features a selection of the pictures and the fascinating story behind their creation.

Swiss photographer Hannes Schmid was given rare access to some of the biggest pop and rock stars of the 1970s and '80s.

In 2003 Canon Ambassador and wildlife photographer Thorsten Milse had what he calls, "a really good idea": he started taking pictures of polar bear cubs. It was an idea that became a financial springboard to a successful career in one of the most demanding fields of photography. Milse describes the risky leap from keen amateur to professional, and suggests a few ideas on getting started as a wildlife photographer.

Elsewhere, French photographer and filmmaker Dominique Issermann explains the ideas behind her dazzling fashion advertising images; American professor Ken Kobré outlines new developments in photojournalism; and there’s an in-depth look at the EOS-1D Mark IV... plus much more.

CPN magazine is distributed free to all existing Canon Professional Services (CPS) members in Europe.
