Canon has unveiled the new EOS 7D 18 Megapixel SLR that offers photographers flexible customisation possibilities, manual control over Full HD video, a range of new technologies and outstanding image quality and performance.

The EOS 7D is the first fruit of a long-term Canon research project involving thousands of photographers from around the world in order to offer the wide-ranging array of features that photographers demand. The camera features an 18 Megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor with 8fps shooting, high ISO sensitivity expandable up to 12,800 for low light shooting, and outstanding in-camera flash technology.

The EOS 7D’s technological advances include...

  • A new iFCL metering system with a new 63-zone Dual-layer Metering Sensor for superbly accurate exposures.
  • An Integrated Speedlite Transmitter allowing the EOS 7D to act as a master flash in a multi-flash set-up.
  • A 100% viewfinder with a 1.0x magnification with a transmissive LCD overlay screen that eliminates the need for interchangeable focusing screens.
  • Full HD EOS Movie capabilities with full manual control of exposure and user selectable frame rates.
  • A 19-point cross-type AF sensor with Zone AF, and a dedicated AF processing unit.
  • Copyright information can be input directly into the camera and is then saved automatically to every image taken.
  • The new WFT-E5 Wireless File Transmitter unit is Bluetooth dongle compatible and also allows linked shooting with other Wi-Fi attached EOS 7Ds as well as full camera control over an HTTP connection.
  • A new Dual Axis Electronic Level can indicate both pitch and roll angles in either the LCD panel or in the viewfinder.
  • +/- 5 stops of exposure compensation, plus +/-3 stops of exposure bracketing.

The EOS 7D’s APS-C format produces a field of view increase of 1.6x focal length - this smaller than full-frame sensor has advantages in camera design by allowing for a smaller, lighter body and lighter, more compact lenses.

63-zone Dual-layer Metering Sensor

The EOS 7D’s new iFCL metering system allows you to capture accurately exposed images time-after-time. This system takes metering readings from the zones that correspond to the AF points that have achieved or almost achieved focus this with the addition of colour and lumenence (SP?) information also gathered from the sensor enables accurate consistent shot to shot exposures

Exposure latitude

Exposure compensation is a massive +/- 5 stop range and an additional exposure bracketing function on the EOS 7D allows up to +/- 3 stops adjustment, so you can quickly set an exposure value that is 8 stops away from the metered exposure.

Autofocus system

The EOS 7D has a 19-point system with some new AF point selection methods. All AF points in the EOS 7D are cross-type sensors with lenses that have a maximum aperture of f/5.6 or faster – a unique feature in a Canon APS-C CMOS sensor camera. The EOS 7D features unrivalled AF tracking whichever AF point you select. AI SERVO II AF mode has been improved to provide more consistent and accurate continuous tracking and is also able to accurately track subjects during Macro photography.

Viewfinder & LCD monitor

The camera has a viewfinder with 100% coverage and 1.0x magnification – a first for EOS - and a Transmissive LCD Screen that means you don't ever have to change focusing screens. This screen can be illuminated in low light and enables several new views to be superimposed such as Single AF points, Spot AF points, AF Area, AF Zones, Spot metering circle and a Grid display.

The 3.0" VGA Clear View II LCD monitor has 920,000 dots, a viewing angle of 160°, and an advanced construction. To combat glare, the air-gap between the LCD’s protective cover and the liquid crystal has been filled with an elastic optical material. This is designed to remove the cause of reflections and helps photographers to view the panel from tight angles and in bright weather conditions.

EOS Movie

The EOS 7D has full manual control of the exposure for Full HD movie shooting for ISO settings up to 6400 and shutter speeds up to 1/4000sec. Selectable recording resolutions and frame rates record at Full HD 1920x1080 resolution at 30fps, 25fps or 24fps. The lower HD resolution of 1280x720 and the standard definition of 640x480 can be recorded at 60fps or 50fps. There is also the ability to perform simple editing of your clip in-camera via a ‘trimming’ feature.

LiveView Mode

With LiveView Mode you can preview the exposure of your image before you take the shot. Pressing the INFO button will cycle the display in LiveView to show the Dual Axis Electronic Level; a screen with the image, AF frame and magnification rectangle; or a fully live histogram for in-depth analysis of your exposure settings. It is also possible to set two types of grid display in LiveView mode to help with composition.

The EOS 7D has 27 custom functions that control exposure, image, autofocus and general operation. A Custom Controls function lets you customise camera controls and buttons so that your frequently used functions can be assigned to a convenient button - you can literally change the configuration of the camera controls to suit your needs.

Handling & controls

The EOS 7D has a Quick Control ‘Q’ button that provides direct access to the camera’s Quick Control Screen on the LCD panel. This lets you change a variety of camera settings swiftly – they are shutter speed, aperture, ISO speed, flash exposure compensation, Auto Lighting Optimizer, custom controls, metering modes, drive modes, AF modes, white balance, Picture Style, Image recording quality, AF point selection and exposure compensation/AEB setting.

WFT-E5 Wireless File Transmitter

The new Wireless File Transmitter unit, WFT-E5, for the EOS 7D offers the ability to wirelessly transmit images from your camera to a computer, adds enhanced remote capture over HTTP, DLNA compliant media server functionality and linked shooting. The linked shooting ability allows a master EOS 7D camera fitted with a WFT-E5 to trigger up to 10 EOS 7D cameras also fitted with WFT-E5 units to capture images from multiple viewpoints.

With the WFT-E5 the EOS 7D can be controlled wirelessly over an HTTP connection using a web browser. This means you can see what your camera sees and control the settings and shooting functions through a web browser or even on a device like a smart phone or an iPod touch.

The EOS 7D is compatible with the full range of Canon EF and EF-S lenses and the EX series of Canon Speedlite flashguns.
