July 2011

Most of the 30 or so exhibitions have been finalised for the 23rd Visa pour l’Image international festival of photojournalism (27 August to 11 September) and they include Magnum Photos Jonas Bendiksen and 2011 Pulitzer Prize winner Barbara Davidson. (See images from all the exhibitions and the stories behind them below.)

Tens of thousands of people will flock to the French city of Perpignan this year during the Professional Week (29 August to 4 September) to soak up the atmosphere, gain inspiration and do business. Photography lovers, news junkies, publishers, agencies and the general public will have the opportunity to mingle with some of the world’s best photojournalists in and around the festival venues.

Flash needed

In addition to the exhibitions, there are nightly screenings of some of the best work of the past year, and there’s a chance to attend seminars and debates at the Palais des Congrès. Photographers will be able to ‘touch and feel’ the latest Canon photography equipment, and there will be ceremonies for the Visa d’Or awards, the Canon AFJ prize and the FRANCE24-RFI Web Documentary award.

Festival director Jean-François Leroy, writing in the 2011 programme, said: “The year has been packed with news: Ivory Coast, Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Sudan, Syria, Bahrain, Iraq, Afghanistan, and, of course, the disaster in Japan. The world seems to have had even more dramas than usual.” There will also be tributes to photojournalists who have lost their lives recently, including Chris Hondros and Tim Hetherington, who were killed in Libya in April.

CPN will be covering the festival. To find out more about the latest updates and plans for the 23rd Visa pour l'Image international festival of photojournalism just visit the Visa pour l'Image website.
