Fashion and beauty photographer Gaetan Caputo has been a long time shooter with the Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II, usually with low ISO ratings. Although the EOS-1Ds Mark II was already a much-loved camera for him Gaetan has now had the chance to road test the EOS-1Ds Mark III and provide CPN with his initial thoughts and experiences of using the camera.

He recalls: “The EOS-1Ds Mark II was the camera that really helped me grow into my photography. I needed a reliable camera that produced high resolution images and had the versatility to cope with the a variety of different shooting situations. The file size was brilliant – files were big enough to allow precision retouching of skin, clothes and hair to satisfy the high demands placed on the images by my clients.”

Assignment background

For the past couple of months Gaetan has been using the EOS-1Ds Mark III in his studio for his fashion and beauty work.

Gaetan explains: “Since most of my work is done in a studio, I always have good quality lighting and I always have full control over it. I use a mixture of flash lighting and continuous lighting to achieve the different effects I like in my images. It means I’m usually shooting at the lower end of the ISO settings scale, between 100 and 400, so I’ve never really had any problems with image noise. I tend to work with only three lenses as well – the EF24-70mm f/2.8L USM, the EF85mm f/1.2L II USM and the EF100mm f/2.8 Macro USM – as these provide all of the focal lengths I need for my work."

Speed is also of the essence, as he says: “I always work in RAW for the most control of the image after the shoot and being in a studio, I like to work tethered to a computer so the images can be seen on a large screen as soon as I’ve taken them – the fashion world can’t wait to see the images they’re commissioning!”

Favourite features

1) Speed of use. Gaetan recounts: “I do also shoot with a PhaseOne digital back for some clients as it provides a very high quality image. However, the EOS-1Ds Mark III is very close now and the extra speed and versatility of the Canon system sees me using it more often than the Phase backs now. Fashion is about a look. Moments can be very fleeting and I need to be able to respond quickly to the situation to get the best shot – and this is what the EOS system provides. Digital backs can be so slow that the moment has passed and you didn’t get it.”

2) Impressive LCD screen. “The next thing I noticed was the LCD screen. It is exceptionally large and impressive. It’s a real welcome upgrade from the EOS-1Ds Mark II. I used to avoid using the LCD screen on the previous model because it was too small to be really useful,” says Gaetan. He adds: “Now though, I can have both an image and histogram on the screen at the same time and still be able to see it clearly enough to make subtle adjustments to the lighting. Even though I am still working tethered to a computer that sits behind me, it has changed the work. I now use the LCD screen while shooting rather than turn around to look at a bigger screen.”

3) Usability. “The usability has been greatly improved as well. The ISO button is now on the right side so I can quickly switch between different ISO settings as needed, and the loss of the ‘press and hold’ system for changing settings has really improved the speed of use of the camera. Even better is the addition of the joystick that allows me to navigate through the menus and images in playback mode. It’s a simple and intuitive system that is very welcome.”

4) The menu system. Gaetan adds: “I’m also very impressed with the menu system. Menus are easy to read on the big screen and they are laid out in a clear and simple manner to quick navigation.”

Downsides

1) Worries about battery life. “Strangely my first thought when I got my hands on the EOS-1Ds Mark III was negative – I was worried about the life of the new smaller battery.” But Gaetan notes: “It turns out I didn’t need to be though. It is smaller, lighter and lasts longer, and it is easier to insert and remove than on the EOS-1Ds Mark II.”

Conclusion

“I’ve already used the camera a fair amount, but as I take more images I will have more idea of exactly how well it is performing in terms of image quality.” Gaetan concludes: “For now though, the camera is a great upgrade to the EOS-1Ds Mark II.”
