Canon Europe has become a new principal partner of the Berlinale Talent Campus, an educational initiative of the Berlin International Film Festival, that will hold its 11th edition from 9 to 14 February 2013. The partnership agreement includes Canon’s support of events with renowned cinematographers, a three-part workshop series called ‘Change your lens, change your story’ and the Post-Production Studio of the Berlinale Talent Campus.

The Berlinale Talent Campus is a special event for young talent in the film industry from around the world and Canon will provide the Talent Campus with technical equipment to produce promotional reels, the Campus trailers, and, for the first time, portraits of all of the Campus participants.

Kieran Magee, Director of Professional Imaging, Canon Europe, commented: “Our new partnership with the Berlinale Talent Campus is something we are extremely proud of. Canon’s core principal, and that of our EOS system, is to empower users to create high quality imagery with products that are also easy to use. This partnership will help us bring these principals to a new generation of filmmakers and enable them to express their creative vision.”

Magee added: “In 2011 we launched our Cinema EOS System, with the objective of bringing our core imaging principals to the world of film. Now, less than two years since launch, our range of Cinema EOS products are regarded as essential tools for filmmakers everywhere. Together with the Berlinale Talent Campus, we are confident we can help filmmakers to take the next step in their creative journey by providing our equipment and knowledge to a new generation.”

The Berlinale Talent Campus Masterclass, entitled ‘Speaking Images: The Cinematographer's Perspective’, is, for the first time ever, being held in co-operation with Canon. Directors of photography Philippe Le Sourd (known for his work on ‘The Grandmaster’ by Wong Kar Wai) and Matthew Libatique (known for his work on ‘Black Swan’ and ‘Requiem for a Dream’ by Darren Aronofsky) will talk about their experiences collaborating with various filmmakers, show excerpts from their work and discuss how the ‘look’ of a film can be determined by using the right camera techniques.

During the 2013 Berlinale Talent Campus Canon will also present a new, three-part series of workshops entitled ‘Change your lens, change your story’ utilising cameras from the Cinema EOS System – the EOS C300, EOS C500 and EOS-1D C. The award-winning US filmmaker David Leitner will present during the workshops and discuss the production and post-production advantages of using modern, yet affordable, digital cameras. The workshops will give insight into the latest developments in filmmaking and how a new generation of HD and 4K cameras, through technical changes alone, will make storytelling easier for filmmakers in the future.

The Post-Production Studio is set up to handle the complex digital workflow following a shoot, and provides directors, cinematographers, editors and producers the opportunity to work with the newest equipment. They will be able to experience more about this decisive phase of production alongside mentors Birgit Gudjonsdottir (a cinematographer known for ‘Our Grand Despair’) and Dirk Meier (a digital colourist and post-production consultant known for his work on ‘Antichrist’ and ‘Dredd’). The Post-Production Studio has been created in cooperation with Canon, the DFFB and the Berlin-based film equipment rental company tectum.

The German portrait and commercial photographer Jörg Kyas will be running a portrait studio to create 300 portraits of the 2013 Berlinale Talent Campus participants. During the Campus event the photos be posted on the Berlinale Talent Campus website and will then be presented in the HAU Hebbel am Ufer venue in Berlin at the end of the 2013 Berlinale Talent Campus week.
