Canon has revealed the new EOS-1D Mark IV 16.1 Megapixel DSLR that features a new 45-point autofocus system as well as extreme low light shooting capabilities, thanks to an ISO system that’s expandable up to a rating of 102,400.

The EOS-1D Mark IV is an APS-H format camera that will replace the EOS-1D Mark III in the Canon EOS-1 series of professional DSLRs. Amongst the camera’s standout specifications are the 10 frames per second shooting capability (with up to 121 large JPEG shots possible in a single burst with UDMA 6 card), plus a high ISO sensitivity that’s expandable up to 102,400 – two stops more than has previously been achievable in the EOS DSLR range.

The EOS-1D Mark IV’s specifications include…

  • A newly developed Area AF system with 45 user selectable AF points, 39 of which are cross-type points.
  • A regular ISO range of 100 to 12,800 with three higher expansion settings – H1 (ISO 25,600), H2 (ISO 51,200) and H3 (ISO 102,400).
  • Dual “DIGIC 4” processors for fast image processing to deliver 16.1 Megapixels images at 10fps.
  • A newly developed 16.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor that’s APS-H format for a 1.3x lens crop.
  • A 63-zone metering system that’s linked to the 45 AF points.
  • Three RAW image sizes – RAW, S-RAW and the new M-RAW setting (approximately 9 Megapixels) – and four JPEG sizes.
  • A 100% viewfinder with a 0.76x magnification and a 28.3 degrees angle of view.
  • Full HD EOS Movie capabilities with full manual control of exposure settings and user selectable frame rates.
  • A total of 62 custom functions, including new functions for microadjustments of exposure and flash exposure.
  • The EOS-1D Mark IV lets you input your copyright information directly into the camera – this is thereafter saved to automatically to every image you take.
  • A new WFT-E2 II Wireless File Transmitter unit is Bluetooth dongle compatible and also allows full camera control over an HTTP connection.
  • ± 3 stops of exposure compensation in 1/3 stop or 1/2 stop increments, plus ±3 stops of exposure bracketing for up to seven shots.

Autofocus system

The EOS-1D Mark IV’s newly developed high-precision 45-point autofocus system includes 39 cross-type sensors that are available when shooting in manual AF point selection mode. The AF system also features a revamped AI Servo AF algorithm with improved reliability, stability and focus-tracking performance.

ISO expansion capabilities

The possibilities of EOS low light shooting have been expanded even further thanks to the EOS-1D Mark IV’s ISO expansion settings. The normal ISO range of the camera is ISO 100 to 12,800 but this can be expanded through the settings of three expansion modes – H1 (to go to ISO 25,600), H2 (to go to ISO 51,200), and H3 (to go up to ISO 102,400). In addition the L setting takes the ISO rating down to 50.

Metering system

The metering on the EOS-1D Mark IV is a 63-zone setup that is linked to the 45 AF points. Metering modes are evaluative, partial, spot and centre-weighted average with the additional possibilities of multiple spot metering and AF point-linked spot metering. The evaluative metering system on the camera has been improved to deliver more consistent metering control with less metering dependence on the subject.

Viewfinder

The camera has a 100% viewfinder with 0.76x magnification. The Laser-matte Ec-C IV standard focusing screen is the same as that on the EOS-1D Mark III for easy focusing, less grain, excellent brightness and natural background blur. The viewfinder’s information display now features a D+ icon for Highlight Tone Priority and five-digit ISO speed display.

LCD monitor

The 3.0” Clear View II LCD monitor has 920,000 dots (VGA), a viewing angle of 160º, and seven adjustable brightness levels. During playback illumination is adjustable by pressing the illumination button. To combat glare reflections are reduced by a resin filling between the LCD and glass - the reinforced glass surface also has an anti-reflective coating.

EOS Movie

The EOS-1D Mark IV has full manual control of the exposure for Full HD movie shooting for ISO settings up to 6400 and shutter speeds up from 1/30sec up to 1/4000sec. Still images can be shot during movie recording and recorded as a separate file from the movie file.

Selectable movie recording resolutions and frame rates record at Full HD 1920x1080 resolution at 30fps, 25fps or 24fps. The lower HD resolution of 1280x720 and the standard definition of 640x480 can be recorded at 60fps or 50fps. There is also the ability to perform simple editing of your clip in-camera via a ‘trimming’ feature. To start shooting movie footage immediately there is a special Quick Start setting that’s triggered by using the FEL button without having to enter Live View Mode first.

Live View Mode

Within Live View Mode photographers can preview exposure of their images before taking the shot. On the EOS-1D Mark IV you have the option of three new AF modes - Live mode where AF is achieved with the image sensor’s contrast detection; adjustable Face detection live mode; and Quick mode. Exposure simulation can now be set within a menu screen – this was previously a custom function on the EOS-1D Mark III.

Custom functions

The EOS-1D Mark IV has a total of 62 custom functions in four groups to control aspects of the camera’s exposure, image, autofocus and general operation. Amongst the new custom functions are AE microadjustment and FE microadjustment to allow precise 1/8 stop adjustments to exposure and flash exposure respectively. As well as these other custom function tweaks include the ability to enable or disable the multi-controller while metering, select orientation-linked AF points, and Auto Lighting Optimizer for ensuring even contrast in images.

Handling & controls

In response to feedback from photographers the controls on the EOS-1D Mark IV have been tweaked to provide better feedback when pressed compared to its EOS-1D Mark III predecessor, ensuring easy handling and improved camera setting operation.

The EOS-1D Mark IV is compatible with the full range of Canon EF lenses and the Canon EX series of Speedlite flashguns.
