Canon has revealed it has signed a new three-year extension to its sponsorship deal with the World Press Photo Foundation to continue a partnership that has been promoting excellence in photojournalism for the past 18 years.

World Press Photo was founded in 1955 and the annual contest is widely acknowledged as the world’s most prestigious contest for photojournalists. Each year the contest attracts entries from thousands of photographers around the world and offers a fascinating pictorial insight into the major global issues and events.

The head of Canon Consumer Imaging, Europe, Rainer Fuehres commented: "Canon is honoured to be continuing its association with this prestigious organisation after 18 years. The images submitted as part of the competition have a tremendous impact on our collective understanding of world events.”

World Press Photo executive board member Lillan Baruch added: "We are delighted that Canon has extended its 18-year relationship with World Press Photo by a further three years. Especially in today's difficult economic climate, this renewed commitment to the future of the photographic industry, and our organisation in particular, means a lot to us. We look forward to intensifying our partnership and to jointly bringing it to the next level."

The 2008 contest had entries from 5,508 professional photographers, from 124 countries, with a total of 96,268 images submitted in the 10 categories. The winning image by US photographer Anthony Suau showed an armed officer moving through a US home following an eviction as a result of mortgage foreclosure.

For the 2009 World Press Photo contest the jury will be chaired by Ayperi Karabuda Ecer (vice-president pictures at Reuters) and, for the first time, the jury will feature specialist juries for the Sport, Nature and Portraits categories - there will also be a special jury for the News & documentary categories.

The managing director of World Press Photo, Michiel Munneke, explained: “We want to make specific use of the views, knowledge and experience of these specialised juries. By doing so we hope to raise the overall standard of what is required within these categories even further, and consequently to ‘up’ the level of the results.”

Online entries to the World Press Photo of the Year 2009 will be open from 1 December 2009 with a closing date of 14 January 2010. More details are available at the World Press Photo website.
