In the latest of an ongoing set of tools for Canon photographers CPN brings you the online panorama calculator. This easy-to-use calculator allows you to input a number of variables so that, via a simple calculation, photographers can determine the number of images they’ll need to shoot to create a panorama, plus the panning increment required between shooting each image.

Digital technology has made it easier than ever to stitch together panoramic images. However, to ensure you get the best stitched images you need to spend some time ensuring that you have captured enough images with enough of an overlap.

There are two ways of shooting panoramas – with the camera horizontally (landscape) or vertically (portrait). While a horizontal camera means less images needed, the best results come from shooting vertically as you get smoother joins and more vertical field of view in your final image. When shooting panoramas, you need to overlap adjoining images to ensure a smooth seam. Most usually, the overlap is between one third and one half of the picture. One half will give the best results, but it is not essential.

A prime example of a stitched together, seamless, panorama.

This Canon panorama calculator tool will help you decide how many shots you need to take to complete a panorama of a given width. To make use of it, you need to decide whether you are shooting in landscape or portrait format and how much overlap you want. Then simply select the appropriate field of view from the table and put the values into the input boxes. The view width is in degrees and the overlap is a percentage – 33% for one third and 50% for half overlap.

The calculator will then tell you how many images you need to take and how many degrees you need to rotate, or move, the camera between each image to get the correct overlap.

To help you to understand the horizontal field of view or vertical field of view (FOV) offered by popular focal lengths within the Canon lens range the table below gives you the FOV values for specific focal lengths. You can find out much more about creating panoramics in the CPN Infobank.
