Currently, I am working on a book for National Geographic Germany about crossing the Dolomite mountains by "fair means", with my own power. It's done in different legs throughout the seasons; I need to hike, climb, cycle and go alpine touring with skis for about 250 kilometres and carry my own luggage and equipment. Therefore, I need lightweight camera equipment without compromising the high National Geographic standards. Not a problem with my trusted 5D Mark III, and the excellent EF24-70mm f/2.8L lens. For low light situations, I carry the EF35mm f/1.4L and my husband Basti, who follows me on the adventure, carries the EOS 7D DSLR with EF16-35mm wide-angle and EF100mm macro lens.

But what to do about the animal photographs? We don't have time to wait for the animals to come or to sit in a hide, we have to be constantly on the move. Therefore, a relatively lightweight super-telephoto lens with zoom was needed. Thanks to Canon, I could try the EF200-400mm f/4L IS USM EXTENDER 1.4x.

It weights only 3.6kg and thanks to its fantastic Image Stabilization system, I can still hand hold it without problems. There are three IS modes available, so I could get the best results on a tripod as well as panning with fast moving mountain goats. The autofocus is very fast and quiet, so it is important not to scare the marmots who came out after sleeping for seven months and who are very sensitive to all noise. To come even closer to the Marmots, I mounted the lens on the 7D and got great results. When not photographing, the lens was carried inside a normal backpack. I admit that I left spare trousers and some food back home because I could not have carried any more weight during our trip, but I was rewarded with great images.
