The fourth issue of CPN magazine – available in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish – is now being distributed and features the work of one of the great and most intriguing photographers of the last 30 years, Magnum’s Gueorgui Pinkhassov.

Beginning with his early days capturing life on the tense streets of Moscow in the 1970s, Pinkhassov reveals what inspires him, what photography means to him and the influence of, among others, the Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky.

Elsewhere CPN magazine asks how, in a world full of images, are photographers to stand out from the crowd? Stephen Mayes, director of VII Photo and former secretary of the World Press Photo Contest, tells CPN magazine that photography, and photojournalism in particular, needs to find a new language and new ways of reaching an increasingly internet-savvy audience. Mayes also gives invaluable advice on how to enter the World Press Photo Contest. In addition, Jim Casper, the founder and editor of Lensculture.com, picks out six of his favourite photographers and what makes them special.

This issue’s In Comparison reveals three very different approaches to capturing images of ‘objects of desire’.

The magazine also includes an eight-page feature on Spanish photographer Isabel Muñoz in which she reveals what connects her portraiture of tribes in Africa and gangs in Central America. There’s a surprising look to the tennis on the courts of Wimbledon, and a backstage pass to a vast, Swedish computer party. And what could be more surprising than the pictures that can be created with Canon’s new generation of tilt and shift lenses? CPN magazine takes a close look at the TS-E17mm f/4L and TS-E24mm f/3.5L II optics.

Canon Ambassadors, and BBC wildlife presenters, Jonathan and Angela Scott explain how the images and film taken by Frank Hurley on explorer Ernest Shackleton’s heroic expedition to Antarctica in 1914 continue to inspire their work. The magazine also examines three very different approaches to photographing ‘objects of desire’, and two American academics explain how certain images become ‘iconic’ and help to shape the culture in which we live.

CPN magazine is distributed free to all existing Canon Professional Services (CPS) members in Europe. If you are an existing European CPS member and want to ensure you don’t miss out on receiving your CPN magazine, please make sure your contact details are up to date by clicking here.
