How HDR made my day

By Gary Schmid, donderdag maart 27, 2014
The exposure range would have been too much for one single shot but the HDR mode of the EOS 5D Mark III was able to combine it all in to one final image without the need to use any special software afterwards.

The Canon EOS 5D Mark III has been my main body for interior and exterior photography since this great camera was launched [in 2012]. Beside all of the good things I, and many others, have already written about this camera I do love the integrated High Dynamic Range (HDR) function.

I sometimes face challenging light situations on my shoots and this is when this function is often very helpful. I can't capture the details in the darkest shadows and brightest highlights with one image. Previously I did a lot of bracketing but the HDR mode does bracketing AND gives me a final HDR image straight away.

The HDR function is easy to access via the 'Creative Photo' button on the left-rear of the camera. A paintbrush icon marks this button and it is a quick way to access Picture Style, Multiple Exposure mode and HDR mode. You can also access the HDR mode via the camera's main menu. The menu in the HDR mode is very intuitive. You select the ± exposure range for three bracketed shots (or use Auto), the style/effect you want (Natural, Art Standard, Art Vivid, Art Bold or Art Embossed), continuous or single, Auto Image Align and whether you want to store the bracketed RAW files with the HDR image or not. Within seconds the camera shows you the result on the LCD screen.

Just recently I've been on a job in the Seychelles for the Four Seasons Resort & Spa, photographing some of its private villas. It is an amazing resort and the HDR mode (mostly set in Art Vivid) gave me some great results with almost no need for any post-production, which is unusual in my field. It is always nice to see the amazed faces of clients when they see a stunning image on the screen!

Even in daylight situations without an extreme exposure range the HDR mode (in this case the Art Vivid effect) gives the image a nice extra 'pop'.
