EOS-1D X on film:
Pt. 4 – Mechanics and controls

EOS-1D X on film

December 2011

Canon’s 18.1 Megapixel EOS-1D X DSLR incorporates a number of key internal features including new mirror and shutter units, plus an improved sensor cleaning system. The fourth of a series of six films about the capabilities of the EOS-1D X examines the camera’s internal mechanisms and explains the benefits of its control layout.

In the film Canon Europe’s European Professional Imaging Communications Manager, Mike Owen, explains some of the key internal mechanics of the EOS-1D X. He reveals: “We’ve been able to achieve the 12fps by putting in a new mirror mechanism that powers the mirror both upwards and downwards, which means it has a lot more control and a lot less mirror bounce.”

Amongst the key benefits of the new mirror mechanism is that it much more responsive; this helps to enable shorter shutter lag times, with a 50ms standard shutter lag and a lag of 36ms possible via a 'Shortened Release Lag' Custom Function. The shutter unit of the EOS-1D X has a durability of up to 400,000 cycles – this compares to the EOS-1D Mark IV’s durability of 300,000 shutter cycles.

In a first for an EOS DSLR the EOS-1D X features a built-in, Gigabit Ethernet port on the side of the camera for higher speed data transfer. The five features of the wired LAN connection are: FTP Transfer, EOS Utility, WFT Server, Media Server and Time sync.

The EOS-1D X has a new sensor cleaning system – known as Ultrasonic Wave Motion Cleaning (UWMC) – that, instead of shaking dust particles off, uses a carrier wave vibration that rolls dust particles down the filters. The carrier wave cuts the risk of scattering dust particles by transporting them to the capture surface under control.

Ergonomics and controls

The controls of the EOS-1D X have been specially designed to come easily to hand when shooting holding the camera horizontally or vertically. On the back of the camera there are two Multi-controller buttons, which enable you to control and move AF points easily, whilst on the front there are two Multi-function buttons (one of which is completely customisable) and two depth-of-field preview buttons – these are all positioned for easy use when gripping the camera horizontally or vertically. On the top plate there is an additional customisable Multi-function (M-Fn) button, where the FEL button was on the EOS-1D Mark IV, that allows photographers quick and precise control of the camera.

The EOS-1D X has Dual CF card slots so photographers need only carry one type of media card. A LOCK function on the rear of the camera allows you to prevent any settings being accidentally changed whilst shooting and, for instant movie recording, the EOS-1D X has a dedicated START/STOP button. A new Quick Control (Q) button on the rear of the camera brings up a Quick Control Screen where camera settings can be accessed, adjusted and viewed quickly via a single button.

The rear of the EOS-1D X features an 8.11cm (3.2”) 1.04 million pixel Clear View LCD II Screen with a 3:2 aspect ratio so you can view the same full-frame aspect ratio you’ve captured. You can also zoom in to 100% for a pixel-for-pixel review of the images you’ve just shot.
