Canon and UEFA EURO 2012TM

June 2012

Just like the football teams taking part at EURO 2012, it's all about teamwork at Reuters too. Before the game we make a plan of where we will sit and another plan should the game go to penalties. It's important that each photographer sticks to his job so that we don’t duplicate shots. During penalty shoot-outs we have cameras focused, from several different angles, on the penalty taker and on the goalkeeper, while it was my job to capture the reactions of the rest of the winning team, who were standing on the halfway line.

So, when Spain’s Cesc Fabregas scored the winning penalty [in the semi-final against Portugal], I got a lovely picture of several players jumping in the air using my EOS-1D X with a 400mm lens. When a group like that celebrates, it always makes a good shot.

During the early games of EURO 2012, we had five photographers at every game. At the Spain versus Portugal match we had seven, so we could cover all the angles. We’ll probably have eight at the final.

We all use a piece of software called Paneikon which sends our images directly to a big server, which can be accessed from anywhere in the world. We have an office in Berlin where our editors sit in front of big screens and receive the images from the photographers. We put in our bylines [name credits] and some basic captions ahead of the game, but all of the editing is done in Berlin. They [editors] see everything we shoot, so we can concentrate 100% on the game.

Speed is key in these matches. When the first tackle goes in, someone on our team will have a good angle on it and we will have it beaming around the world within minutes. When you’re shooting at 12 frames per second, which the 1D X can do, you can fire off a quick burst of five frames of two players tackling and the editors will be able to pick out the best one; there’s always one frame that's better than the others. It could be that you can see the players’ faces or the ball is in a better position; the editors will see it, crop it and send it. Job done!

I have really enjoyed using the 1D X during EURO 2012. I particularly like shooting full-frame on long lenses, because the background drops out so well. Anything that makes your job easier, you have to enjoy.
