25 years of EOS

September 2012

In March 1987 Canon introduced the all-new EOS (Electro Optical System) SLR System with the iconic EOS 650 SLR camera that featured an EF electronic lens mount, Canon’s first completely new lens mount in 28 years. So, would photographers leave all their existing Canon SLR equipment behind and upgrade to EOS? The answer was a resounding 'yes'. In the intervening 25 years EOS has become the world’s most successful and popular SLR camera system – with over 80 million EF lenses and over 50 million EOS cameras produced.

Canon has consistently invested in the development of the EOS System to guarantee it provides the most advanced technologies and exceptional image quality for photographers of all skill levels. The EOS digital photography system now spans DSLRs, over 60 EF mount lenses, the new EOS M compact camera system, Speedlite flashguns and flash devices, WiFi devices for wireless image transfer, GPS devices, plus grips, batteries, remote controls and cables.

In 2011 Canon expanded the EOS System into the world of fully-fledged movie making with the addition of the Cinema EOS System that now includes the EOS C500 4K camera, the EOS-1D C 4K DSLR, and a growing range of Canon Cine Lenses (in EF and PL mounts). With the EOS System constantly developing and evolving the next 25 years seem sure to be as fascinating as the first 25 years of EOS…

Canon Ambassadors interviews

Throughout 2012 many of the Canon Ambassadors took the time out to discuss their favourite ever EOS images and their recollections of using the EOS System. The result is a series of enlightening and fascinating filmed interviews with most of the Ambassadors – from one of the world’s top wedding photographers, Jeff Ascough, to wildlife and nature photographer Michael ‘Nick’ Nichols (an Editor-at-Large for National Geographic); and from celebrity portrait shooter Lorenzo Agius to multiple award-winning photojournalist Brent Stirton (Reportage by Getty Images).

CPS members’ favourite EOS images

In July 2012 CPN invited CPS members to submit their favourite images to special guest editor Maria Mann (Director of International Relations & Business Development for the European Pressphoto Agency, aka EPA). Maria’s illustrious 25-year plus career in the international photo industry, including senior roles at Corbis and AFP, made her the ideal person to make the final selection.

From the thousands of images submitted Maria Mann made a special selection of her favourite EOS images shot by CPS members around the world. You can now view her exclusive choice of EOS images by clicking on the image wall below.
